Why Maintaining Your Tankless Water Heater Is Essential

How Often Should I Flush My Tankless Water Heater?

Depending on your water usage and the mineral content in the water running through your unit, your tankless heater should be flushed every six months to two years. Water with a medium to high mineral content is known as hard water. Hard water contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, most commonly calcium and magnesium. Running hard water through your tankless heater will require that you regularly flush the system. Soft water on the other hand contains fewer dissolved minerals, leaves smaller deposits of lime and scale, and subsequently requires that you flush the heater less often than if you were running hard water through it.

What is Lime and Scale Flushing?

Your tankless water heater must be properly maintained to sustain maximum water flow and performance. The most common maintenance required by tankless heaters is known as flushing. Flushing is a process that uses virgin food grade white vinegar to break down mineral deposits of lime and scale that build up inside the heater over time.

What Supplies Do I Need for The Flushing Procedure?

For this flushing procedure, you will need a small garden hose, a small circulation pump or pond pump, a five-gallon pail or bucket, five gallons of virgin food grade white vinegar, and about one hour of time. NOTE: This procedure and supply list is recommended for tankless water heaters installed with isolation valves only! If your heater is not installed with isolation valves, it is recommended that you seek the assistance of a professional.

Count on us for professional maintenance of your tankless water heater.

Heading into Hurricane Season – Is Your Home Prepared?

In our area, we unfortunately know all too well the devastating effects that hurricanes can leave in their wake. Often, severe storms and hurricanes cause power outages that can last for hours, and sometimes days. We know that being without power is more than a mere inconvenience – it can pose health and safety risks and can be extremely costly for homeowners.

People with health concerns often need a source of electricity for their home medical needs, like dialysis machines, oxygen or nebulizers. And, infants, the elderly and the ill are especially sensitive to extreme weather – indoor climate control is extremely important to their health and well-being. Looking for a Super-Efficient Way to Cool & Heat Your Home? Consider Ductless

When you’re looking at a new home comfort system, you should know that now more than ever, there are many choices available that can help you and your family enjoy better indoor temperatures – and improved energy efficiency – all year long, no matter what the weather. Chances are, you have heard of ductless systems, and it’s likely that you’ve noticed them on occasion in friends’ homes, situated high on walls or in ceilings. But what are the actual benefits of installing a ductless system in your home?

Ductless systems, also known as mini-splits, offer year-round cooling and heating in specific areas of your home. The main advantage of installing a ductless system is that they deliver heating and cooling to specified areas without the need for additional ductwork. There are a variety of ductless systems available that provide you with efficiency and aesthetics, as well as the comfort of a traditional system – without the bulk and noise you get with window air conditioning units and space heaters. Here are five incredible ways having a ductless system installed in your home can help you and your family enjoy improved home comfort all year long:

Ductless systems are flexible. While traditional systems rely on ductwork to deliver conditioned air through your home, a mini-split system provides the air directly to specific areas. They are a much more efficient and cost-effective choice than other single-space heating or cooling units (like window AC, space heaters or electric radiators) and offer greater temperature control.

Ductless systems are money-savers. If your current heating or cooling system is 10 years old or more, then the chances are pretty good you’re not getting the efficiency you could be getting. Ductless systems offer one of the most efficient means of heating and cooling on the market today. They require less power and allow homeowners to only heat or cool the rooms in their homes that are occupied. What’s more, many ductless systems are eligible for tax credits or utility rebates – and that can help you save on installation.

Ductless systems help with your home’s IAQ. IAQ, or indoor air quality, can be a serious concern for people with allergies or other respiratory problems. Ducted systems can get dirty, which causes contaminated air to be circulated time and time again throughout the home. A ductless system obviously has the benefits of no dirty ducts, but also offers advanced filtration for your home.

Ductless systems offer easy installation. A traditional, ducted installation can take days – and can cause some major disruptions to your home life because of the construction fuss and mess. On the other hand, ductless systems are operated with very small pipes that don’t require rebuilding walls or ceilings, and you won’t lose any area in your home.

Ductless systems are efficient. Because of their small size and their pinpoint cooling and heating abilities, ductless systems provide improved energy efficiency. They use an environmentally sound refrigerant that is non-ozone depleting, and allow homeowners to only heat and cool the specific rooms that are in use.

At Burkhardt, our ultimate goal is top comfort for you and your family, as well as energy savings for your household. The Benefits of Smart Thermostats

You may have heard the buzz about smart thermostats, but you’re not really sure if one is right for your home. Sure, they’re trendy, but can they really make that much of a difference when it comes to your home comfort levels or your energy savings? Every type of thermostat has its benefits and its pitfalls. Basic thermostats are certainly easy to use, but don’t necessarily promote the greatest energy savings. Programmable thermostats are perfect at keeping your home comfortable and helping you become more energy efficient – as long as you can program them in the first place! So how are smart thermostats any better?

First of all, let’s explain what a smart thermostat is. While undeniably trendy, they’re also a pretty great tool for monitoring and controlling your indoor environment, and, ultimately, lowering your utility bills. But the best part about having a smart thermostat is the control you as a homeowner will have. You can adjust the temperature from just about any mobile device with access to the Internet, and most smart thermostats provide an easy interface for controlling the thermostat while at home. There are many new brands and models available on the market right now, so with some research you can find the right one for your home.

Smart thermostats may seem complicated and technologically advanced, but they are much simpler to use than many people anticipate. You can get your smart thermostat up and running just the way you’d like it by just a few taps on your Smartphone. You can get the thermostat easily set to the temperature you want. Forgetting to change the temperature when you go to work is no longer an issue when you have a smart thermostat – you can just hop online once you get to work and set the temperature as appropriate. And, many smart thermostats are able to “learn” your preferences over time, and automatically set the right temperatures in your home, depending on the time of day, or day of the week.

Additionally, some smart thermostats are able to alert homeowners to possible issues with their HVAC systems. That’s a great benefit in and of itself, as early detection of any problems can help repairs be less costly, and can keep a potentially dangerous situation from becoming worse. All of these benefits combined can help you with your home’s energy consumption – and that can ultimately help you save money when it comes to your utility bills.

At Burkhardt, our ultimate goal is top comfort for you and your family, as well as energy savings for your household. Stay Cool this Summer with these Heat Busting Tips

When the weather outside starts to swelter, it can be tough to keep cool, especially outdoors, away from the comfort of your home’s air conditioning system. But when it gets too hot to handle, staying cool is important not only for your comfort, but also for your physical well-being. When people ignore the proper precautions during hot weather, there are many physical illnesses that can come about, like heat cramps, heat exhaustion and sunstroke. You can be safe when the weather is at its hottest, though, with these tips from the American Red Cross.

Don’t venture out. If you don’t have to be outside, then stay indoors! Use fans in your home to help circulate the cool air throughout your home. (Remember, fans only move the air around but can’t actually cool it.) Close curtains or blinds to keep the direct sunlight out of your home.

Take it slow. One of the easiest and best ways you can take care of yourself during a heat event is by simply avoiding strenuous activity. If you need to labor, try to do so between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., when temperatures are cooler. Take frequent breaks, and make sure you’re getting enough fluids.

Drink water. Making sure you get adequate hydration is an absolute must. When you’re outside, take water with you everywhere you go and take frequent drinks, even if you aren’t thirsty. If you prefer, drink juice, but try to avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, as they can aid in dehydration.

Dress appropriately. Wear light-colored, lightweight, breathable clothing in fabrics like cotton. Darker colored clothing and synthetic fabrics tend to hold the heat in. Keep yourself shaded by wearing a sunhat or carrying an umbrella.

Think of friends and family. If you know of friends and family who are elderly or ill, keep in mind that they can particularly struggle during a heat wave. Check on them often. Keep your furry friends out of the heat, too, and keep their dishes filled with fresh, cool water.

Of course, when the weather is at its hottest, your air conditioning system will be running at its hardest. Make sure it’s working properly by trusting the experts at Burkhardt Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration to help. Our technicians want you to stay safe and comfortable, and one of the ways we can do that is by helping you get the AC you need. Count on us for professional installation, maintenance or repair of your air conditioning system, as well as for a whole host of your other home comfort needs. Thinking About New AC? 5 Ways to Know It’s Time to Replace

If you’ve been thinking about having a new air conditioning system installed in your home, it’s a pretty good bet that you’re not just looking for a way to spend some cash. You know that air conditioning is a necessity, and it’s a significant expense. So replacing it is probably not something you want to do, but something that you need to do. How can you be sure if it’s time to replace? According to ENERGY STAR there are certain telltale signs that signify a replacement might be in order. Here are five indicators that can help you decide.

  1. You’re not comfortable. If your air conditioning system is running and your home simply is not as cool as you’d like, it’s not doing its job. It’s important that you and your family feel comfortable in your home, and if your air conditioning system isn’t keeping your home as cool as it did in the past, it might be time for a replacement. There are situations where you simply need repair or maintenance, though, which is why it’s always a good idea to have a qualified technician examine your system before making any decisions.
  1. Your air conditioner is more than 10 years old. If this is the case, then you can expect that your system is probably not as effective or as efficient as it once was. In fact, there have been so many advancements in air conditioning in recent years that it’s likely your system never was as efficient as newer models may be. Think about replacing your old air conditioning system with one that is ENERGY STAR rated. Our technicians can install your new unit and help you save up to 20 percent on your home cooling costs.
  1. Your energy bills keep going up. Does it seem like cost-wise, one summer is worse than the next when it comes to your home’s energy consumption? Even in Louisiana, where AC is used year-round, spikes in your energy bills when the weather is at its hottest, year after year, are a pretty good indication that your air conditioning system’s effectiveness is declining.
  1. You’re noticing excess humidity. While there can be other problems afoot, such as leaky ductwork, if you’ve been noticing that your home is more humid than it was in the past, your equipment is probably not operating as effectively as it should. Or, your equipment may not be sized appropriately to your home (this is especially the case if you have some areas of your house that are still too warm, even with the AC running.)
  1. You’re constantly making repairs on your system. If you find that you’re calling your air conditioning contractor on a frequent basis, then your system may just not have that much more life left in it. It is probably time to at least start researching your options for new air conditioning. If the repairs are starting to get pretty expensive, the chances are it would be much more cost effective in the long run for you to have new AC installed.

When you need to install new air conditioning in your home, then you can count on the experts at Burkhardt Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration to help. The Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning

Have you been thinking that there’s a space in your home where you’d like air conditioning, but ductwork would be impossible or impractical to install? Then you might want to consider ductless air conditioning. It’s an option for homes that either lack ductwork or are built in such a way that installing new ductwork would be difficult. Why not just use a window air conditioner? There are a few reasons that come to mind. They can be unsightly, obstruct your views, but most importantly, they can be energy-suckers and aren’t necessarily easy to maintain. Okay, then – but what are the benefits of ductless, you might be wondering?

Other than being an affordable alternative to central air conditioning, there are a few other advantages to ductless air conditioning that you might not be aware of, or have not considered. Here are five benefits of ductless AC that just might make you decide that ductless is for you:

  • Space Savings: Ductless air conditioning units are compact, and that makes them ideal for any area where space is tight. They work great in larger homes for cooling individual areas, like attics and cellars. They can also be used to cool small apartments in their entirety.
  • Ease of Installation: Because no ductwork will have to be installed, ductless cooling systems are easier and quicker to install. Ductwork can take a week or more to install. Our technicians can get your system installed from start to finish in as little as one day!
  • Cost Effectiveness: Ductless AC uses much less power than a typical window AC unit, and multiple units installed in your home can be more efficient than a central air conditioning system. This translates into energy savings – and smaller utility bills.
  • Ease of Operation: Wouldn’t you love it if cooling down was as easy as changing the channel on your TV? It is, when you have a ductless air conditioning system. Most are equipped with a remote that allows you to change the room temperature at the touch of a button.
  • Quietness: If you have a window air conditioning unit, you know they can be noisy. Not so with ductless AC. Most people equate the noise they make to a low hum that’s easily drowned out by the noise of everyday life.

When you choose a ductless air conditioning system from Burkhardt, you can count on the fact that we’ll help you get a unit that will not only keep your home more comfortable, but will also help you conserve energy in your home. Many of our systems are ENERGY STAR® qualified and can be eligible for federal and state tax credits as well as local utility rebates. You’ll get the comfort you’d expect from a traditional air conditioning system, without the bulk, noise and inefficiency of a window unit.

At Burkhardt, our ultimate goal is top comfort for you and your family, as well as energy savings for your household. When you need ductless air conditioning installation, maintenance or repair for your New Orleans, LA area home, rely on Burkhardt Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration to meet your needs.
